I finally finished that 800 page book
on The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Diary:
It was raining this morning. I was too worried that I might procrastinate my routine just because the morning was cold and inviting to sleep in. But I persevere, like a real functioning adult. I finished this book last month and wondering why I have no substance to talk about immediately. As the time went by and after finishing three more books in between, I have something to say about this book apparently.
The last big book I read was A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, which was 5-6 years ago. 700 page book is already a big challenge for me but somehow I still want to read The Historian because of the premise. It was mainly about the history of vampire (not Cullen clan) and how protagonist uncover the secret and dark society and all that jazz. I bought the mass paperback version published by Back Bay Books from secondhand bookshop last year and actually surprised at how dense the book felt. I didn't know how previous owner read this without cracking the spine, which I assumed was not the case.
The story, I personally felt was too draggy for the first 300 pages, but I still wanted to give it a chance. I think the halfway got better, after a few secrets were explained and I wasn't confused as much anymore. The story set in Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and sometimes USA, which I totally wasn't familiar with. But hey, that's why we read right?
I thought despite the sheer thickness and dense writing style (a lot of flashbacks), this book worth my time and I'm happy I get to experience it. This might be my practice piece before reading The Count of Monte Cristo one day.
